This volume, the 7th volume in the DRUMS Handbook series, is part of the aftermath of the successful ESPRIT project DRUMS (Defeasible Reasoning and Uncertainty Management Systems) which took place in two stages from 1989- 1996. In the second stage (1993-1996) a work package was introduced devoted to the topics Reasoning and Dynamics, covering both the topics of "Dynamics of Reasoning", where reasoning is viewed as a process, and "Reasoning about Dynamics", which must be understood as pertaining to how both designers of and agents within dynamic systems may reason about these systems. The present volume presents work done in this context extended with some work done by outstanding researchers outside the project on related issues. While the previous volume in this series had its focus on the dynamics of reasoning pro­ cesses, the present volume is more focused on "reasoning about dynamics', viz. how (human and artificial) agents reason about (systems in) dynamic environments in order to control them. In particular we consider modelling frameworks and generic agent models for modelling these dynamic systems and formal approaches to these systems such as logics for agents and formal means to reason about agent­ based and compositional systems, and action & change more in general. We take this opportunity to mention that we have very pleasant recollections of the project, with its lively workshops and other meetings, with the many sites and researchers involved, both within and outside our own work package.

S is a high-level language for manipulating, analysing and displaying

data. It forms the basis of two highly acclaimed and widely used data

analysis software systems, the commercial S-PLUS® and the Open

Source R. This book provides an in-depth guide to writing software in

the S language under either or both of those systems. It is intended

for readers who have some acquaintance with the S language and want to

know how to use it more effectively, for example to build re-usable

tools for streamlining routine data analysis or to implement new

statistical methods.

One of the outstanding strengths of the S language is the ease with

which it can be extended by users. S is a functional language, and

functions written by users are first-class objects treated in the same

way as functions provided by the system. S code is eminently readable

and so a good way to document precisely what algorithms were used, and

as much of the implementations are themselves written in S, they can be

studied as models and to understand their subtleties. The current

implementations also provide easy ways for S functions to call

compiled code written in C, Fortran and similar languages; this is

documented here in depth.

Increasingly S is being used for statistical or graphical analysis

within larger software systems or for whole vertical-market

applications. The interface facilities are most developed on

Windows® and these are covered with worked examples.

The authors have written the widely used Modern Applied Statistics

with S-PLUS, now in its third edition, and several software libraries

that enhance S-PLUS and R; these and the examples used in both books

are available on the Internet.

Dr. W.N. Venables is a senior Statistician with the CSIRO/CMIS

Environmetrics Project in Australia, having been at the Department of

Statistics, University of Adelaide for many years previously.

Professor B.D. Ripley holds the Chair of Applied Statistics at the

University of Oxford, and is the author of four other books on spatial

statistics, simulation, pattern recognition and neural networks. Both

authors are known and respected throughout the international S and R

communities, for their books, workshops, short courses, freely

available software and through their extensive contributions to the

S-news and R mailing lists.

This edited reference addresses controversial clinical issues of the psychiatric aspects of epilepsy. The book explores the reasons behind the poor communication between psychiatrists and neurologists and suggests potential remedies to this important problem, and two chapters are devoted to examining whether psychiatrists and neurologists are properly trained to recognize and treat conditions that both disciplines commonly encounter in clinical practice. Identification of the causes behind the high rate of comorbidity between epilepsy and mood, anxiety, psychotic and attention deficit disorders is given high priority in the volume, and a specific review of the evidence of common pathogenic mechanisms that may be operant in epilepsy and these psychiatric disorders is included. Recently identified bidirectional relationship between mood disorders and epilepsy and its implication in the course and response to treatment of the seizure disorder are also explored. Several chapters are devoted to rectify common misunderstandings of the use of psychotropic drugs in patients with epilepsy, including the use of antidepressant and central nervous system stimulants. Finally, one chapter explores the possibility of organic causes of psychogenic non-epileptic seizures.

The 38th Session of the Codex Committee on Food Additives and Contaminants requested the Codex Alimentarius Commission, at its 29th Session in 2006, to seek scientific advice from the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) and the World Health Organization (WHO) on the risks and benefits of fish consumption: specifically, a comparison of the health benefits of fish consumption with the health risks associated with the contaminants methylmercury and dioxins (defined here to include polychlorinated dibenzo-p-dioxins [PCDDs] and polychlorinated dibenzofurans [PCDFs] as well as dioxin-like polychlorinated biphenyls [PCBs]) that may be present in fish. The health risks associated with dietary exposure to these compounds have previously been assessed by the Joint FAO/WHO Expert Committee on Food Additives (JECFA).

The Codex Alimentarius Commission request was driven by growing public concern in recent years regarding the presence of chemical contaminants in fish. Over the same period, the multiple nutritional benefits of including fish in the diet have become increasingly clear.

The evolving science in this field has led to questions about how much fish should be eaten, and by whom, in order to minimize the risks of chemical exposures and maximize the health benefits. National authorities have been faced with the challenge of communicating complicated and nuanced messages to consumers and also with questions on how to regulate maximum levels of these chemical contaminants in fish and other foods.

Seventeen experts in nutrition, toxicology, epidemiology, dietary exposure and risk-benefit assessment discussed the risks and the benefits of fish consumption. Their task was to review data on levels of nutrients and specific chemical contaminants (methylmercury and dioxins) in a range of fish species, as well as recent scientific literature covering the risks and benefits of fish consumption. The review was used to consider risk-benefit assessments for specific end-points, including for sensitive groups of the population. The output is intended to provide guidance to national food safety authorities and the Codex Alimentarius Commission in their work on managing risks, taking into account the existing data on the benefits of eating fish.
